Why The Flex Disc Is the Best Replacement for Tampons

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard about the recent studies revealing that popular tampon brands—even the ones labeled as ‘organic’—contain lead, arsenic, and other toxic chemicals. Naturally, this has caused quite an uproar online, and for good reason. Apparently, we’re supposed to just toss out our tampons and… what? Freebleed? Menstrual Cup? Flex Disc? Doctors are trying to calm us down, saying it’s only a tiny amount, and we don’t even know if these chemicals get released and absorbed by our bodies…

Honestly, as if dealing with bloating, cramps, mood swings, and everything else that comes with our period every. single. month. wasn’t enough, now we have to worry about being poisoned by the very products we use to keep things under control. Yay, I love being a girl! It’s fine, I’m fine, everything is fine…

Thank goodness my friend convinced me to try out Flex Discs! I’m not gonna lie, they look super intimidating at first—they’re huge, and the idea of fitting one inside me seemed a bit wild. But guess what? They actually work!

I’ve tried to ditch tampons before by switching to a menstrual cup, and let me tell you, that was a nightmare. It was ridiculously hard to put in, nearly impossible to take out, and it leaked constantly. It was like trying to rip a suction cup off a wall, but, you know, inside your body. I watched every tutorial video, read the instructions a million times, and still, it just wasn’t for me.

How It Works

That horrible experience made me really hesitant to try the Flex Disc. I was worried it’d be just as bad—impossible to use and barely effective. But I was totally wrong! The Flex Disc squishes down and inserts just like a tampon. No awkward folding or maneuvering with three fingers like the cup. Taking it out is just as easy—just push a little, hook the disc with your finger, and it slides right out.

The best part? You can wear the Flex Disc for 12 hours straight, which is way better than the 8-hour limit on tampons. And there have been zero cases of Toxic Shock Syndrome linked to the Flex Disc! With tampons, I’m constantly counting the hours, worrying about needing to change it, and freaking out about TSS. But with the Flex Disc, you can leave it in for a full 12 hours, and you can even empty it while it’s still inside you! I know that sounds wild, but you just bear down like you’re going to the bathroom, and it empties itself. Plus, it’s supposed to help with period pain because it sits in the widest part of your vagina, unlike tampons that sit lower in the narrower canal.

The Downsides Of The Flex Disc

Now, nothing’s perfect… On super heavy days, you’ll want to empty the disc more often to avoid leaks. And when you take it out at the end of the day, it can be a bit messy, so avoid doing it over a rug or your clothes—better yet, just do it in the shower. That way, you can rinse everything down the drain and keep things clean.

All in all, I’m a huge fan of the Flex Disc. Being on my period is so much less of a hassle now. Most days, I actually forget I’m even on it. You can even get a reusable one, which is super cost-effective in the long run! I usually buy mine from Amazon, and next month I’m planning to try the reusable version—I’ll let you know how it goes!
